5 Ways Couples Can Turn Tequila Into a Shared Ritual
For some couples, rituals look like candlelit dinners or weekend routines. For us, they can look a little different.
We’ve seen how tequila can become more than just a drink—it can be a way to connect, explore, and create meaningful moments together. One of our favorite examples is our recent weekend getaway in Auburn. We stayed downtown in a new-to-us spot and walked everywhere, meeting new bartenders and talking to people about tequila. We started with tequila before switching to sparkling water or cappuccinos. There’s no agenda, we’re just exploring and “be-bopping” around, but more on that later.
Whether it’s exploring somewhere new or returning to favorite spots, tequila becomes part of the experience—not the focus, but the thread tying it all together.
Here are five ways you can start to create that kind of ritual in your own relationships.
Turn Tasting Into an Experience
You don’t have to limit tequila tastings to your kitchen counters.
Sometimes, the best way to explore tequila is to get out into the world—try a new bar, visit a new town, or simply sit somewhere new and see what they carry. That’s the heart of what we call “be-bopping.” It’s about curiosity, discovery, and being open to whatever the experience brings.
You can make tasting feel alive by turning it into something you do together, not just something you drink.
Pair Tequila with a Rhythm You Love
Rituals aren’t just about what’s in your glass—they’re about what surrounds it.
You can build simple rhythms into your time together, whether that’s a weekly dinner out, a walk between stops, or ending the night with something comforting like dessert or coffee. Our new favorite rhythm in Montgomery is to head downtown on a Friday night, enjoy a nice dinner at Ravello, and walk over to 23 Court for our new favorite cocktail, “tequila old fashion”. Afterwards, we walk back to Ravello and get a cappuccino and dessert to end the night.
It’s not complicated, but it’s consistent. And that’s what makes it meaningful.
Use Tequila to Mark Moments - Big or Small
You don’t need a big reason to celebrate—but you do need to notice the moments.
Whether it’s a birthday weekend, a small win, or just time set aside to be together, tequila can become part of how you mark those experiences. Our recent weekend adventure in Auburn was a wonderful, but low-key birthday celebration. While not every weekend is a big celebration, we do try our best to make every weekend a moment to slow down and notice one another, our lives, and everything that we’re thankful for.
You can do the same by choosing to treat ordinary time as something worth acknowledging.
Create Something That’s Yours
Over time, the best rituals start to feel personal.
You might find yourself returning to a specific drink, a favorite order, or a small detail that feels like “you.” For us, that’s a simple tequila soda with a lime wedge—something that blends both of our preferences into one shared choice.
One of the best ways to create something that’s yours (and to actually remember it), is to write it down! We create The Tequila Journal just for this scenario. When we’re out and about, we like to take a moment and do our own tequila tasting, noting what we enjoyed about the sip and what we would rate it. It’s a fun way to create a special moment together.
It doesn’t have to be elaborate. It just has to feel like it belongs to you.
Let It Be About Connection
At the end of the day, this isn’t really about tequila.
It’s about what tequila makes space for. Conversation. Presence. Connection. We love to talk about how tequila helps break the ice and open the door to getting to know people—whether that’s each other or someone new we meet along the way.
You can take that same approach by slowing down, being present, and using these moments to genuinely connect.
Rituals don’t have to be complicated—they just have to be intentional.
We can create them in the way we explore, the way we celebrate, and the way we spend time together. Tequila simply becomes a small but meaningful part of that—something that brings us back to each other, again and again.
The best rituals aren’t copied. They’re created.
And they can start with something as simple as a single pour. 🥂
